How to Play

The one rule that runs the whole game

Every character in Bros & Cons is one of two kinds:

• A Bro always tells the truth. Every statement a Bro makes is true.
• A Con always lies. Every statement a Con makes is false.

Your goal

Each round presents a small group of characters, and each of them makes one or more statements: about themselves, about each other, or about the group. Your job is to use pure logic to work out who is a Bro and who is a Con, and then choose the suspect the puzzle is asking you to find.

You never have to guess. A well-formed logic puzzle has exactly one arrangement of Bros and Cons that makes every statement consistent with its speaker’s nature. Find that arrangement and you have solved it.

How to read a statement

The trick is to test an assumption and follow it to the end:

• If you assume a character is a Bro, then whatever they said must be true.
• If you assume a character is a Con, then whatever they said must be false, so the opposite is true.

Whenever an assumption forces two facts to contradict each other, the assumption was wrong, so the opposite must hold. This “assume, then check for a contradiction” method solves every puzzle in the game.

A worked example

Two suspects, Alice and Ben.

Start by assuming Alice is a Bro (a truth-teller):

• Then her statement is true, so Ben is a Con.
• Ben is a Con, so his statement is false. He said “we are the same kind,” so in truth they are different kinds, which fits perfectly: Alice a Bro, Ben a Con.

No contradiction. Now check the other assumption to be sure it is the only answer. Assume Alice is a Con:

• Then her statement is false, so Ben is a Bro.
• Ben is a Bro, so his statement is true: they are the same kind. But we just said Alice is a Con and Ben is a Bro: different kinds. Contradiction.

The second assumption breaks, so the first is the truth: Alice is a Bro and Ben is a Con. That is the whole game in miniature: no luck, just following the rule.

Tips for solving faster

• Chase contradictions, not confirmations. It is usually faster to assume a nature and hunt for the clash than to try to prove someone honest directly.
• Statements about a whole group are powerful. A claim like “everyone here is a Con” can often be resolved on its own, giving you a foothold.
• Once you fix one character, cascade it. A single confirmed Bro or Con usually forces the rest into place.
